One Aldwych

Csar award in 2005

In a grand Edwardian building that once housed the offices of the Morning Post newspaper, this luxury hotel is liked for its 'helpful' staff, its 'superb' food and its 'elegant' public spaces filled with contemporary art. The large double-height lobby has huge flower arrangements and a striking statue of a boatsman by London sculptor Andr Wallace; a 'large and light space with comfortable seating', it is 'a peaceful place for morning coffee'. There are two restaurants: in Axis, chef Dominic Teague's seasonal dinner menus might include wild bass, crushed potato, samphire, shellfish vinaigrette; Indigo, a 'relaxed' restaurant overlooking the Lobby Bar, has modern European dishes. Guests also have use of a residents' lounge with velvet armchairs, cocktails, and an all-day menu. The 'comfortable' modern bedrooms have 'fantastic pillows', original artwork and many thoughtful touches: flowers and fresh fruit are delivered daily; a weather forecast for the following day is placed on the pillow at turn-down. Children are welcomed with their own bathrobe and slippers; games, books and toys available to borrow. (HRL, and others)
