Gravetye Manor

There is a 'lovely smell of wood smoke' from the open fires at this luxury hotel (Relais & Châteaux) set in 'beautiful countryside'. Once the home of William Robinson, the pioneer of the English natural garden, the 16th-century Elizabethan manor house is surrounded by extensive grounds with wild meadows, Victorian glasshouses, a pear orchard and flowerbeds 'full of exuberant colour'. The house and gardens have been extensively renovated by the owners, Jeremy and Elizabeth Hosking; Andrew Thomason is the manager. The Arts and Crafts public rooms have dark wood panelling and bold floral displays, easy chairs on thick carpets. The staff are 'charming', the atmosphere is 'not at all stuffy'. Bedrooms have a mix of antiques and the latest technology; afternoon tea is served 'with ceremony' in the lounges. 'Our splendid corner room overlooked the glorious gardens. We had a comfortable king-size bed and a sitting area.' The cooking in the candlelit dining room is 'of the highest order'; modern British dishes might include roast squab pigeon, confit leg tortellini, salt-baked beetroot. There are freshly squeezed juices and an 'excellent' full English breakfast. Gravetye Manor is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.
  • All quite perfect, room, service and cooking, as it should be at the price of D,B&B. The gardens were a dream, the planting choice of colour and form could not be bettered anywhere, and the gardeners helpful and full of information. We had expected some choice in the menu for dinner but we were told on our first night that it was just one set menu (four courses) which changed each day. The whole house was beautifully maintained and most professionally run.
