Star Castle

Csar award in 2009

'Highly recommended' by a visitor this year, the Francis family's hotel is a star-shaped fortress built in 1593 on the commanding heights of Garrison Hill above Hugh Town. James Francis runs the front-of- house; Billy Littlejohn has been promoted to head chef. A visitor in 2014 who arrived 'in a howling gale' quickly 'thawed out in spirit over a fantastic dinner; the service was excellent; all we could hope for'. In the beamed Castle dining room, once the officers' mess, there are modern dishes like cauliflower velout, ribbons of smoked salmon; assiette of lamb, savoy cabbage, smoked pancetta, rosemary jus. It is 'warm and welcoming', with log fires, formal white cloths, silver napkin rings and candles. In the summer, guests can dine under a magnificent vine in the airy Conservatory, where seafood is the speciality. The bedrooms are in the castle and single-storey buildings in gardens outside the walls (a short open-air walk away). 'Interesting' main-building rooms, which fit around the star shape, have dark furniture and deep colours. The garden rooms, which are more modern in style, have 'wonderful views'. (Richard Bright)
  • We had a marvellous 4 nights and cannot recomend the hotel more highly. We had a look at the Garden Rooms and in summer would be the place to stay even though the decor could be described as slightly old fashioned. However views to die for. For this time of year we were grateful to be in the Castle so we did not have to brave the weather to make our room. The dinner was fantastic as was the service and the staff were just what one would hope for. The 3 South Afrian guys and the girl from Devon were great! A great Breakfast too

  • A friendly welcome. Our garden room was smallish but had everyething you need. and a veranda with a fine view. We thought the dining room a little cramped. The Conservatoy restaurant was spacious and light. Fish dishes beautifully prepared. Breakfast had a rather ordinary buffet, a wide range of cooked dishes, ordinary toast. Staff very efficient. A lovely stay
