Glenfinnan House Hotel

In an 'idyllic' setting on the shore of Loch Shiel, the MacFarlane family's Victorian mansion is run as a 'lovely traditional hotel' by the 'pleasant' managers, Manja and Duncan Gibson. Guests 'arrive to the sound of a tumbling stream and the scent of a log fire'. Returning visitors in 2014 'were welcomed with a box of chocolates and a hand-written note'. There are fresh flowers in the hall and the drawing room. Many of the paintings in the panelled rooms have a Jacobite theme including an impressive portrayal of the 1745 rising at Glenfinnan (a monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie stands across the loch). Traditional music is often played in the bar, where meals can be taken off the same menu as in the more formal dining room. Duncan Gibson is the chef: there is 'plenty of choice' on his 'very good' menus. 'A venison tasting platter was especially good.' 'We were well looked after in a modest but friendly Highland way.' No key to the 'comfortably furnished' bedrooms ('we think of this as a Highland home'). Packed lunches can be provided for the many walks in the area. (Alan and Edwina Williams),
  • Our second visit. We stayed in two rooms. Both were fine. The double had a great bathroom with an enormous spa bath and underfloor heating. The food was excellent. Though it was the end of May, there were roaring fires in all the public rooms, which added to the warmth and comfort.

  • We thought it wonderful. Our top-floor family suite was vast, with huge bathroom and comfortable bed. The view was amazing. On our last night we moved to a first-floor room, more compact but still with four-poster. The old building has been sympathetically furnished without compromising character or comfort. Fresh flowers everywhere. The setting is idyllic.
